Milltone  :  Jam with my new instrument

(Full audio quality is available at 320p, the video quality scales to about 480p)

I got a Milltone Drum in the mail today, after much debate between a Milltone and a Zen Tambour. I may still get a Zen, but for now, jamming on this Milltone is pretty sweet.

Anywho, I opened up Reason to get a few drum loops going so I could jam along with my Milltone. I kinda liked the jam, so I structred it, and recorded it on my Droid X (the far shot) and my old Panasonic miniDV cam (the close shot), and threw them together with the audio track laid over it.

Mixing and quick mastering was done in Sonar, I added an EQ, compressor, delay, and flange (in that order) to get a spacier tone from the milltone.

I mic’d the Milltone with my Samson C01- it’s not a very expensive mic, but it does decent for the price. I stuck it in the chamber because that’s where it got the fullest tone; hang-type drums are notrious for being ard to mic becauseeach note on the drum has a different sweet spot, and you also have to catch resonance.

When you mic above the chamber, you get a bit less bass response, and a bit more slap from the fingers. Also, micing closer to the edge of the bowl near the lowest not gets yuo the best “boom.”

As usual, in the spirit of open source, I’m including my Reason file, the raw recording of the Milltone, and an MP3 of the end recording.

And of course, the Reason Backing Track. If that doesn’t work, let me know, it’s all Reason 4-included samples.
